\nSteinach, Switzerland<\/h1>\n

The new biogas plant in Steinach in the canton of St. Gallen in Switzerland has opened its doors. Since 2023, it has served as a pioneering facility for sustainable energy production from biomass. Every year, around 4,000 tons of green waste and crop residues are not only processed, but transformed into a valuable source of energy.<\/p>\n

From organic waste to biogas<\/h2>\n

The plant is characterized by its fermenters, in which the biomass undergoes a dwell time of 21 to 27 days. During this process, the organic material is broken down under anaerobic conditions, producing 345,000 Nm\u00b3 of biogas. This biogas consists of 53% methane (CH\u2084), a potent source of energy that is converted into electrical and thermal energy in a combined heat and power plant. The resulting energy output is 94 kWel for electricity and 95 kWth for heat.<\/p>\n

The energy generated is fed into the local electricity and heating grid, helping to supply the community with renewable energy while reducing dependence on fossil fuels.<\/p>\n

Local cycles and environmental protection<\/h2>\n

The biogas plant in Steinach is more than just a power plant; it is a flagship for ecological recycling management. Through its integration into an existing composting plant, it promotes the closing of material cycles and enables the efficient use of local resources.<\/p>\n

Another advantage of the plant is its function as a supplier of fertilizer for agriculture and gardeners. The fermentation residue from biogas production is used as a high-quality fertilizer, which helps to improve the soil and ensure healthy plant growth conditions.<\/p>\n
